Accra, Ghana (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Ghana midfielder Michael Essien will miss the
World Cup due to a knee injury.
Essien, who plays for Chelsea in England's Premier League, was injured in the
Africa Cup of Nations in January and missed most the club season. He hoped to
return for the World Cup in South Africa, but will not recover in time.
"An evaluation by a combined team of medical experts from the Ghana Football
Association and Chelsea Football Club revealed that Essien will not make full
recovery until the end of July. The Ghana Football Association wishes him full
recovery and a quick return to football action," read a statement on Ghana's
website.
Essien, 27, has played 51 times and scored nine goals for Ghana.
Ghana opens the World Cup against Serbia on June 13 and also plays Germany and
Australia in Group D.
