Colts' Simon hopes to return for opener after knee surgery
Football Betting Lines
08/22/2006 - INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -Indianapolis defensive tackle Corey Simon is likely to miss a couple of more weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his injured left knee, but was hopeful he could return for the regular-season opener. ``It was just that, after the second opinion, we thought it was best to go that way,'' he said. ``So we took care of it.'' Simon hasn't practiced since banging his knee Aug. 4. Colts coach Tony Dungy had only said that the Colts were considering surgery for the former Pro Bowl defensive tackle who signed a five-year deal last September. Dungy was expected to comment after Indy's afternoon practice Tuesday. At 300 pounds, Simon is the biggest player on a defensive line that is undersized by most NFL standards. Known as a run-stuffer, Simon is expected to play a major role in the Colts' defensive tackle rotation that also includes Montae Reagor and Raheem Brock, a converted defensive end who is moving full-time to tackle this season. Simon plans to sit out Saturday against New Orleans and if he misses the preseason finale Sept. 1 against Cincinnati, it would mark the second straight year he's missed the entire preseason. The Colts first regular season game is against the New York Giants on Sept. 10. In 2005, Simon held out in a contract dispute with Philadelphia before the Eagles finally released him Aug. 28. Four days later, the Colts signed the former Pro Bowl selection - hoping he would be the final piece to their Super Bowl puzzle. But skipping meaningless games does not concern Simon. ``The preseason is great,'' he said, smiling. ``It's the preseason, you know.'' The question now is how long it will take him to get to 100 percent. He reported to camp significantly lighter and admittedly in better shape than last year, and he acknowledged that it would take some time for him to get back in football shape. Yet Simon believes he'll be ready to contribute when the games count. ``I'm definitely ahead of the curve from where I was last year,'' he said. ``I think I was playing pretty well, practicing pretty well and keeping the weight off. ... The only bad thing is that nothing gets you in shape for football but football.'' The Colts' other big concern is the status of backup quarterback Jim Sorgi, who injured his throwing shoulder in Sunday night's 30-17 loss to Seattle. Sorgi had been bothered by a sore right shoulder all summer, and he was on a pass-count during Indy's three-week training camp, which ended Saturday. But Sorgi left Sunday's game after just three plays - a handoff, an incomplete pass and an interception that was returned for a touchdown. He was driven into the ground on the final two plays and left for good after the series. If Sorgi can't play this week, that would mean seven-year veteran Shaun King and undrafted rookies Josh Betts and Mike McGann could see more action. Should Sorgi be out longer, the Colts may need to add another quarterback to the roster. ``Shaun has played in big games before, he's been with different teams and in different situations, so I think that's good,'' two-time MVP Peyton Manning said. ``But we're still waiting to hear about Jim's situation.''Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press. Kansas City, MO - Kansas City has not officially named Matt Cassel its starting quarterback, but there can be no doubt now.
NFL Betting
After praising his leadership and work ethic through spring workouts, the Chiefs announced Tuesday they had signed the 27-year-old Cassel to a multiyear contract. Terms were not disclosed, but he will almost certainly be one of the highest-paid members of the team.
"We are excited to be able to reach a long-term agreement for Matt Cassel to be a Kansas City Chief for many years to come," owner and board chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement. "His proven leadership on and off the field will be a tremendous asset to the organization."
Patriots made him their franchise player, meaning his salary for this season will be about $15 million.
New head coach Todd Haley, taking over for Herm Edwards after a 2-14 season, refused to name a starter at any position during offseason workouts. But it was obvious to everyone the team belonged to Cassel.
"I go out there each and every day with that focus that I'm the starter," Cassel said during a June minicamp. "Competition brings out the best in everybody."
The signing will come as welcome news to Cassel's new coaches and teammates. Amiable and hardworking, online football betting he appeared to win over everyone at minicamp.
"I think he's got some unique leadership qualities. I think his teammates like him and have respect for him. I think he's doing a pretty good job on the field, too," Haley said last month. "He's doing everything that I'm asking him, that our coaches are asking him to do. I don't have one single complaint how he's carrying himself."
After one workout, wide receiver Devard Darling declared Cassel "a breath of fresh air."
"He has a lot of swagger, a lot of confidence. It's good for us," said Darling. "We trust in him that he's going to go out there and lead us all the way."
nse to accommodate his specific abilities.
Trapped on the bench behind Heisman winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart at USC and then unable to unseat Super Bowl MVP Brady at New England, Cassel seemed destined to be a backup all his life. As Brady was helped off the field last September, Cassel seized the opportunity he'd been waiting for since high school.
In his only sustained action since his teens, he hit 349 of 555 passes for 3,949 yards at New England. He had 23 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions as the Patriots, who had gone unbeaten through the regular season the year before, finished 11-5 and out of the playoffs.
Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli, who had been Bill Belichick's assistant in New England, engineered the trade after the Patriots became convinced that Brady would recover fully from his knee operation.
"Since Matt arrived in Kansas City, he has embraced the team and the community," Pioli said. "His work ethic, his ability and competitive presence is what we expect from our players."
